Immigration Key Election Topic in Democrat Presidential Debates

2020 Presidential Election: Immigration Key Election Topic in Democrat Presidential Debates | Immigration Lawyer Mario Godoy | Immigration Simplified

20 presidential candidates debated on live television on Wednesday and Thursday, June 26 and 27, at the first Democratic presidential primary debate in Miami, Florida. A key election topic was evident to the public and to political commentators:

  1. The use of Spanish by candidates
  2. The focus on immigration as a central election issue

Latino Voters

Democrats made it clear they want to reach out to Latinos. News outlets called it the first bilingual presidential debates as candidates tried to demonstrate their ability to speak Spanish. Over the two nights, candidates who spoke to the public and each other in Spanish were Beto O’Rourke, Cory Booker, Julián Castro and Pete Buttigieg. Bill de Blasio has spoken in Spanish publicly but did not speak Spanish during the Wednesday debate. On the first night, after O’Rourke spoke en Español, then Booker answered a question about immigration in Spanish – and then one of the moderators asked his question in Spanish.

Immigration

On the 1st night, Julián Castro spoke about the photo of a father and daughter who drowned trying to cross the border into the United States. He is from Texas and was the first candidate to release an immigration plan. Most of the presidential candidates said their health care plans would include health insurance for undocumented immigrants. Democrat debaters agreed that the humanitarian crisis caused by the Trump administration’s policy of family separations for migrant detainees are harmful and not in America’s best interest.
