Citizenship for U.S. Armed Forces Members & Veterans

Current members and veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces who are not already U.S. citizens may be eligible for expedited naturalization. This includes service in the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, Coast Guard, National Guard, and the Select Reserve of the Ready Reserve. In addition to an expedited naturalization, USCIS allows for posthumous citizenship to members of the U.S. Armed Forces who died in active duty.

Who Is Eligible?

The following eligibility requirements apply for citizenship through military service, under Section 328 or 329 of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA):

  • You must be a member or veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces.
  • You must submit Form N-426 Request for Certification of Military or Naval Service with Form N-400 Application for Naturalization, to show honorable military service.
  • You must be a lawful permanent resident.
  • You must meet certain requirements related to presence/residence in the U.S.
  • You must be of good moral character.
  • You must be able to read, write, and speak basic English.
  • You must have knowledge of the U.S. government and history and show an attachment to the values of the U.S. Constitution.
